He turned his eyes up towards Sorin’s face one last time before succumbing to sleep, but only managed to catch a glimpse of the inked vines and blossoms wrapping themselves around his throat before his eyelids were too heavy to keep open. Guilt weighed heavy on his shoulders, both for what he had been about to do, and for what he had already done.

I square my shoulders and step closer to him. "Here's how this is going to work." My voice is calm with practiced authority. I've run this routine many times, over many missions. "I will ask you questions, and you will answer concisely. I am under no orders to kill you, but if you do not cooperate, this will get messy."
Bessa smiles politely, the curious tilt of his head almost bird-like. "Very well. There are yet uses for this vessel; it would not do to have it harmed. Raise your queries, Seeker."

Her younger self would have never expected to die like this, withering away in a small home on a river, cared for by a loving wife, her skin stained with paints instead of blood. It was not a warrior’s death. The girl she once was, long ago, would have accused her of being a coward. The only honorable death is by the blade of a worthy opponent, she would have said. Living a civilian’s life has taught her that perhaps peace is worth more than honor.
